4 Most Common Hair Loss Causes and How You Can Fight Back.

One in four women suffers from hair loss and hair thinning. If you are that one then you probably have spent hours on the net trying to find a solution to this exhausting and draining matter. As a hair-loss and hair-thinning specialist, I have come across hundreds, if not thousands, of women who battle with this problem. They come from various age groups, nationalities, and races. Despite many advancements in medicine and technology, it is still difficult to know what to do to treat hair loss. Luckily for you, I have helped many women with hair loss and can share my knowledge on the different types of hair loss conditions, the main causes, and available treatments.

While the way we experience hair loss varies from person to person the clinical term for hair loss is alopecia. The term alopecia is very broad. Let’s look at four subcategories of alopecia (hair loss) and what you can do to love your hair again.

What is Androgenetic (Androgenic) Alopecia?

This is known as male pattern or female pattern baldness. It is directly related to genetics, hormones, and environment. Dihydrotestosterone also known as DHT causes the hair follicles to shrink over time by shortening the anagen (growth phase) and prolonging the shedding phase.

It causes the hair to grow thin, sparse, and fragile.

The following are some of the physical signs of this type of hair loss:

  • Excessive hair shedding

  • Facial acne

  • Oily skin

  • Hair thinning, receding hairline

  • Bald patches

  • A widening part

Unfortunately, there is not anything you can do to stop this from happening. However, you can take control of it by stabilizing hair loss and slowing down the progression. If you have wondered how you can fix a receding hairline there are medicinal and cosmetic solutions that can treat and enhance the hair.

Do Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia) work?

These are the top 2 FDA-approved solutions for this type of hair loss. Some physicians also prescribe spironolactone to treat hair loss. In addition to medical treatment, there are some cosmetic solutions such as topical ointments and boosters that can be used. PRP and low-level laser therapy are 2 other solutions that are FDA approved but you won’t need a prescription for them. This treatment can be recommended by your hair-loss expert. I have personally experienced and used the laser cap for years and I have to say I found that very effective in promoting new hair growth and recovering my hair. The downside of using a laser is it takes a long time to be effective. For immediate results, thickening shampoo and conditioners, hair fibers, hair extensions, and hair toppers are the best solutions to mask the thinning areas. Going to a hair loss expert stylist is very important and can be extremely helpful to find the solution that will work best for your hair loss.

What is Telogen effluvium?

TE is a type of hair loss that is generally caused by trauma or shock to the body. In this case, a large percentage of hair follicles go to an early shedding phase. The follicles all fall out at once which results in clumps of hair coming out in the hairbrush. Bald patches can develop overnight or over a few weeks period. After the stress of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, this type of hair loss became pretty common. The good news is that the hair will come back if there are not any other underlying contributors. It can take six to eighteen months for the hair to return.

It is crucial to have a balanced diet and good nutrition to foster hair regrowth. Proper hair care, DHT-blocking shampoos, and follicle boosters are extremely helpful in regrowth and recovery from this type of hair loss.

What is Alopecia Areata?

Alopecia areata is a condition that is generally caused by the immune system attacking the hair follicles. It shows up as a bald patch ranging from the size of a penny to several inches wide.

This type of alopecia is treated with an immunosuppressant, topical steroid creams, and shots. There are ways to treat it naturally by increasing nutrients and vitamins such as Zinc, vitamin D, A, B complex, and selenium.

This is a very treatable condition. The hair loss patches can go away however bald spots can return on different parts of the body in different sizes. The most important factor in treating this condition is to stay calm about it and seek professional and medical assistance to make sure it won’t become permanent. These spots can be covered with hair fibers or small hair toppers until they get treated.

What is Traction Alopecia?

This hair loss is due to tension and excessive pulling of a hair follicle. It can occur after a tight braid, ponytail, consistent use of a hair clip or beaded extensions.

Traction alopecia is not a permanent condition and it is only localized to the small area where the traction has happened. It can become permanent if it is not addressed and repeated pulling of the hair happens over time.

As you see, all hair loss is not created equal. Understanding the root cause of the problem is the first step to recovery. The tricky part of hair loss is that it is very hard to narrow down the exact cause. Usually, there are several underlying factors that affect overall health and profoundly impact your hair. Hormones, stress, environment, metabolism, and poor nutrition can shorten the growth phase and disturb the catagen and telogen phases of your hair.

There are many myths and thousands of different snake oils in the hair-loss industry. More people than ever are experiencing chronic stress, which can contribute to hair thinning and hair loss. We live in a society where nothing is good enough or fast enough. We all seek instant gratification and can’t imagine having to wait for something when we decide we want it.p
